A few hours later, after the first rush of early diners—mostly elderly visitors—had departed the restaurant, Ruthie decided to grab a quick break before the later crowd came in. It was after six, but she knew it would still be light enough to sit outside by the pool for a few minutes and enjoy the last rays of the setting sun. She needed to be alone, quiet, needed to calm her churning thoughts.

It hadn't been easy to go back to work, but she'd done it. She'd calmly prepared marinade, seasoned vegetables, made last-minute changes to the starch side dish for the evening because of an unexpected shortage of wild rice. And all the while her mind had been elsewhere. With him. In a darkened kitchen filled with laughter and champagne. In a darker bedroom filled with slick kisses and warm, dreamy caresses.

She badly needed some air. Leaving her assistant in charge for a few minutes, she left the restaurant, intending to go right outside. Before she could pass through the lobby, however, she spied Celeste emerging from the elevator. Most of the men in the vicinity stopped to watch her lovely, blond cousin, too. Ruthie hid a smile, knowing Celeste didn't even notice. Since meeting her new husband, Dain, last year, Celeste had been oblivious to every other man on the planet.

"What are you doing here?" Ruthie asked, intercepting her cousin before she reached the check-in desk. "You're supposed to be on your honeymoon!"

Celeste shrugged. "You think I was gonna be able to enjoy ten days of sun, sand, alcohol and great sex not knowing what was happening up here with the hotel?"

Ruthie tapped her finger against the side of her cheek, a smile tugging at her lips. "Well…"

Celeste laughed. "Okay, yeah, I guess I could have enjoyed it. But Dain promised me a rain check. He knows I would have been distracted and he's the one who suggested we put off our trip for a couple of weeks."

"He's a darling," Ruthie said. "I feel terrible that you're missing out on your vacation, though!"

"It's all right. We're staying here at the hotel for a few nights, so it's sort of like a holiday. Believe me, I'm getting some use out of that book you gave me at my wedding shower, the one about invitations for sex? We played strangers in a bar last night. I handed him our room key wrapped in a pair of red silk underwear."

Ruthie choked out a laugh. "Those room keys sure do get around," she mumbled under her breath. Her cousin looked at her quizzically, but she didn't try to explain.

"Walk with me to my office," Celeste said. "I've been tossing some figures around and I want to show them to you."

Glancing at her watch, Ruthie realized she had a little time to spare and followed Celeste. They were just rounding the corner beyond the lobby, heading toward the offices, when Ruthie spied a very tall, dark-haired man engaged in a heated conversation with a brunette.
